Wings to Fly

I'm more convinced than ever that the greatest gift a person can give you is belief in your dreams. It's like having wings to fly.

When I met my husband David we were sixteen years old and I had already started to dream about writing. What I loved about him was his unwavering belief that I would some day be a publishes author. Neither of us knew what that road would look like, but we both believed it was possible.

Over the past sixteen years we dated, graduated from high school, went on to college, got married, started a business, bought a house, had our children and continued to dream together about the future.

In January of this year, my dream to finish my first novel, and dive into the publishing world, became a reality. Something clicked and I was ready to go after it. This wasn't the "perfect" time, as our twins were just turning two, but I realized that if I was going to do it, now was as good a time as any.

I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say this, but writing a book is hard work! I've had my ups and downs, but something kept lifting me higher and higher - something gave me wings to fly towards the impossible: my husband's belief in me.

There have been key moments when I know that God was using my husband as a mouth piece to proclaim life into my writing. One time was when I had my first semi-rejection. Through a compliment from a friend, there was also a criticism. That night I had tears in my eyes as I told my hubby what was said and that's when he told me: "Even if no one ever reads your words, keep writing. It was what you were born to do." The next day he bought me a writing desk. All I could do was put my arms around him and cry.

Another moment came when my one sentence hook was chosen by Randy Ingermanson as one of the best out of almost a thousand others submitted (he chose twenty-one). I squealed like crazy when I saw that email and my husband celebrated with me. If ever I've seen someone "beam" it was him that night. That's when he told me: "Your determination is inspiring."

Not only has he spoken life into my dream, he's also acted upon his belief in me. He agreed to spend the money to send me on a weekend retreat with My Book Therapy and two weeks ago he surprised me when he said I should go to ACFW, even if I wasn't ready to pitch my WIP. He told me (and I quote) "It's time to put our money where our mouth is." :)

Each time I've received a little victory on this winding road, he's been there to cheer me on. Each time I've run up against an obstacle, he's there to help me get over it. He praises me when I've done something right and he let's me cry on his shoulder when I'm feeling overwhelmed. He's never once said a word against my dream, even when I have.

So I soar to heights unknown, with the wings that my husband has given me, because he believes in my dream and tells me it was what I was born to do.

What about you? Who gives you wings to fly? What words of life has someone spoken into your dreams? What has someone done to show you they believe?

Bushel of Fun from Keli Gwyn

Here's a little peek into the Bushel of Fun I received from Author Keli Gwyn this week! I've already started using the lavender soap and the lovely aroma greets me every time I walk into my bathroom. My six year old said: "Mmmm, what is that pretty smell?" Keli, your gift keeps on giving! Thank you.

I shared this on Facebook, but I'll share it again: I'm now registered for the ACFW Conference in Dallas! I'm so thrilled to have this opportunity and I'm counting down the days until I can meet all of you face to face. I'm praying for the conference and our time together!

What about you? Have you won anything lately? What are you praying for?

ACFW Conference

"Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." Proverbs 15:22

I've decided to use my blog as a survey of sorts today. Recently my husband surprised the socks off me (a term my mom is fond of:) by telling me we have the funds and childcare available to let me go to the ACFW Conference in Dallas! Before that, I hadn't even considered the possibility.

At first I was beyond thrilled, but as I began thinking more and more about it, and after I read Jody Hedlund's How to Know When to Go to a Writing Conference, I started to question if I'm ready. Going to the conference would be a big financial commitment and I want to make sure I'm using the money, and my time, wisely.

I've heard that one of the biggest benefits of going to the conference is the ability to pitch to an agent and an editor, but currently my WIP isn't ready for that. I know I could finish it in time for the conference (I'm in the rewriting and editing phase), but it's never been critiqued, it's never been in a contest and I'm not even sure if it's quite "there," yet. But should that stop me from going to ACFW?

So, here are my questions for those of you who've gone to the conference:
Was your manuscript "pitch" ready when you went the first time?
If my manuscript isn't ready, is it wise to make appointments with an agent and editor, just to talk about my idea and learn from them?
In your opinion, what is the biggest benefit of going to the conference - do you agree it's the agent/editor appointments?

For those of you who haven't gone before:
Are you going this year?
Is your story ready to pitch?
What are you looking forward to?

I appreciate your insight on this subject. I've had the opportunity to hear Laura Frantz' perspective (thanks, Laura!) and Lindsay Harrel's (thanks, Lindsay!) and I'm eager to hear yours, too.

Victorian Tea with Debut Author Keli Gwyn

Today it is my great pleasure to host debut author Keli Gwyn on my blog for a Victorian Tea. We would love for you to join in the conversation, no gown required. Don't forget to leave a comment ~ Keli is giving away a free copy of her novel, A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California to one lucky commenter.

Gabrielle Meyer
Keli Gwyn

Keli, thank you so much for calling on me at my cyber home today! Ever since I was a guest at your blog, I've been eager to have you stop by mine. Before we start visiting, I'd love to offer you something to drink. Since this is a Light Tea, I have a variety of teas and sweets to offer. What would you prefer?

What a delight it is to be here, Gabrielle. You have such a lovely cyber home. I’ll take some peppermint tea if you have it. Oh, and a couple of those vanilla scones. They smell heavenly.

Of course I have peppermint tea and help yourself to as many scones as you’d like. I will have some white tea and a chocolate scone, because, as I always say, if it's not chocolate, it's not worth it!

Your dress is simply stunning, Keli! I love the vibrant purple - and the matching hat is a perfect addition. Where did you find it?

Thank you. I’ll admit to being quite smitten with my outfit. The seamstress I hired outdid herself. She designed the dress and the hat. The gown looks just like the one my heroine, Elenora Watkins, is wearing in the final scene of my debut novel.

I can’t wait to read your story and I’ll be looking for that dress now! I’m eagerly awaiting the copy of A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California that I won as part of the Bushel of Fun on your blog's Friday giveaways.

By the way, did you know that when I began blogging in February of this year, your blog was one of the first I came across? Since then I've enjoyed getting to know you and watch you release your debut novel. I know you live near the setting of your book, but you haven't always lived in California. At one point you were in Germany. Can you tell us what brought you there?

Before my dear Gwynly became a teacher, he served as a missionary in Germany, working with American high school students whose parents were stationed there. Gwynly returned to the U.S., gave up his job as a research chemist, returned to college, and got his teaching credential. He wanted to work with teens instead of making plastic.

Gwynly became a high school science teacher and dreamed of returning to Germany and teaching the young people who’d captured his heart. He applied for several years, but it wasn’t until after we married that he was hired to teach at Nürnberg American High School. I like to say that the Lord knew Gwynly needed to meet me first. :-)

We spent four and a half years in Germany, living there from 1989-1993. We were there when the Wall came down and the Cold War ended, and when U.S. troops were sent to fight the first Gulf War. Watching history in the making was amazing.

That does sound amazing! I’m sure Gwynly was happy to return to Germany with a bride by his side. Your blog is full of little tidbits about your life and I feel like you do a great job sharing the real life romance you enjoy with him. I love how you weave it into your day to day living. As a wife, what have you discovered is the secret to a successful marriage?

I am definitely blessed. Gwynly is an amazing guy! I would say that what makes our marriage work so well is that we take the other person into consideration. We both put the other first much of the time, even when that means sacrificing what we want.

Putting your spouse first isn’t always easy, but I’ve also learned it is one of the most important things we can do for our marriage.

Another aspect of your blog that I enjoy is watching your writing journey unfold. A few weeks ago you had the privilege of seeing your book in print for the first time! I loved watching the video you made at the post office while you opened the box and pulled the book out.  I was crying tears of joy with you.

My seven-year-old daughter sat by me as we watched the video and when you mentioned that you'd dreamed of writing since you were seven, my daughter looked up at me with a huge grin on her face, because she wants to be a writer, too. You've been dreaming of this moment for over forty years, in your opinion, what do you think is the most important thing you've done on the road to publication?

Oh Gabrielle, I love hearing about your daughter’s reaction. That is so precious.

I think the single most important thing I’ve done to get where I am today is to study craft. Like many newbie writers, I was eager to get an offer of representation and a publishing contract. I sent out a handful of queries a year and a half into my journey, received well-deserved rejections, and learned that I had much to learn.

At that point, I made a decision. I chose to stop writing for a year and learn all I could about how to craft a marketable story. That choice made a big difference. When I began rewriting the strongest of the five stories I’d completed at that point, I could tell my writing had improved.

To see how close I was to having a story that would attract the attention of publishing pros, I entered the new version of my story in several contests. It did well, garnering me several wins and requests for fulls from final round judges. One of the judges, Rachelle Gardner, offered me representation. I still had work to do on the story, but I was more than willing to do it. My work did end up resulting in my first sale, which was quite rewarding.

Putting your writing on hold must have been a hard thing to do, but it was a wise decision. I had to put my writing on hold when I learned we were expecting twins. My consolation was that, even though I wasn’t writing, I was still gaining insight and wisdom that I could add to my stories. As writers, our books are often birthed from our own life experiences, both the good and the bad. If you could go back to one moment of your life to relive, which one would it be and why?

My, what a thought-provoking question. I would go back to a day before my beloved mother-in-law learned that her cancer had returned for the third and final time. I would give her a hug and kiss and tell her how much I love her. She knew it, but to be able to see her before her decline and let her know how much she meant to me one more time would be a real blessing.

Your love for your mother-in-law is so evident in your answer, Keli. She was a blessed woman to have you as a daughter-in-law.

I recently saw your guest post on Jenny Blake's blog and she asked you a great question. She said: If you could have a meal with 3 living people, who would you choose and why? I want to know, if you could have a meal with three people who are no longer living, who would you choose and why?

This one is easy. I would dine with my mother-in-law, my father-in-law, and my maternal grandmother. They were all believers and showered me with unconditional love. It would be wonderful to let them know that their support and encouragement filled my cup and helped me fulfill my lifelong dream of being a published author.

I always hope that those people who go on before us, especially those who have furthered the Kingdom of God in our lives, have special access to see what we have done here on Earth. My grandfather passed on three years ago and I hope he can see how his faith has left a lasting legacy of believers on Earth.

Thank you for stopping by my blog home today, Keli. It's been an honor to have you visit. I've loved getting to know you better and I look forward to calling on you at your blog home again soon. I'm praying that your debut novel will be a great success and that we'll be seeing many more novels from you in the near future.

Thank you for having me, Gabrielle. What a gracious hostess you are. Spending time with you and your blog’s visitors is wonderful. I’d like to end by asking all of you a question. Who was one of the first people to believe in you and encourage you to follow your dream?

Keli Gwyn writes stories that transport readers to the 1800s, where she brings historic towns to life, peoples them with colorful characters, and adds a hint of humor. A California native, she lives in the Gold Rush-era town of Placerville at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains. Her debut novel, A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California, set in the heart of the Gold Country where she lives is currently available.

When Keli’s fingers aren’t hovering over the keyboard of her newfangled laptop, she enjoys strolling past stately Victorian houses in her historic town, burying her nose in reference books as she unearths interesting facts to include in her stories, and interacting with other romance readers. Her favorite places to visit are her fictional worlds, the Coach factory outlet store, and Taco Bell.

Friday Fun: Minnesota Style

It's Friday again! Where is the summer going? School supplies are already on the shelves at the store. What?!?! Thankfully we still have another five weeks of summer vacation to enjoy - even if Wal Mart doesn't agree.

I'm excited to share more Minnesota with all of you! This week I am taking you to one of my favorite places. These pictures were taken as we drove to my in-law's home on the lake and then from their backyard.

This lake is especially important because David's grandfather bought a cabin in the 1960's and raised his family here. When David's dad had a family, he bought his own cabin and eventually tore it down and built a year round residence. When I dated my husband we spent hours and hours on this lake and fell in love here. Our children are the fourth generation of Meyers to enjoy this beautiful place.

David and I rented the house on this farm right after we left
college in Iowa and moved back to Minnesota. It's a Century
Farm and has been in the same family since it was built.

This is one of my favorite roads, it leads
right up to my in-law's driveway.

David's mom and our daughters went down to greet
Dave's aunt & unlce and their children when they
came by to visit, via lake!

My hubby and kiddos swimming in the lake
 - a family tradition.

A beautiful end to a beautiful day at the lake.

What about you? Do you have a home or property that's been in the family for many generations?

My Home in the Blogosphere

Six months ago I picked out a little home in this world called the Blogosphere. I established an address, chose my color scheme and arranged my space. I put out the welcome sign and even told a few friends that I was now taking visitors.

At first, I had a handful of people stop by and say hello, but that was it. I was thankful for my early followers, many of them good friends and family, but I was eager to meet other blogging neighbors.

I've been a new member of a church, a new mom in MOPS, a new parent in an early childhood class, the "new" girl in high school and a new employee at a business - but I've never been a new blogger in the blogging world. How does one go about making friends in the Blogosphere?

It was time to ask for help from a long time blogging friend. She said that the neighbors don't come to you at first, you have to go to them. Visit their blog homes, read their posts and add thoughtful comments. Not everyone would stop by my blogging home to say hello, she told me, but many of them would and over time I'd start making friends in the Blogosphere. Hmmm.

So I decided to go out and meet the neighbors. I was a little hesitant at first. Would the neighbors like me? Would they visit? Would they extend the offer of friendship when I visited them? Did I really have anything to say that would keep them coming back? I wouldn't know until I tried.

I started by finding a handful of authors blogs and I began clicking on the people who commented. It didn't take me long to realize that a lot of them knew each other already. Have you ever walked into a room of people who you'd never met, but they already knew each other? Had inside jokes and a history together? It's intimidating, to say the least! But over the weeks, I continued to visit them regularly and, to my great delight, I found that they are not an exclusive group, but they love welcoming new neighbors with open arms. Many of them came to visit me and we've begun to build bonds of lasting friendship.

At first it was overwhelming keeping track of all the people I was meeting! So many names, blog homes and faces to memorize. But even though it was overwhelming, it was also exhilarating! I was finally meeting my neighbors - and what I realized is that I had a great deal in common with all of them! We're writers. We have writer's hearts and we all dream about sharing our words with the world. Each person has a unique gift that is solely theirs, but the beauty of it is, we all work for the same Boss. He's commissioned each of us to do our part and He's enables us to fellowship so that we can encourage and edify each other. How awesome is that?

I'm so happy I chose to move into the Blogosphere. After six months I've changed my color scheme (have you noticed my new background?) and I feel like I'm getting settled to be here for a long time.

Thank you, dear friends, for stopping by to visit with me and for extending the gift of friendship. It is my greatest honor to be serving alongside each and everyone of you. You amaze me every single day.

What was the best advice you received when you first started blogging? Any tips for someone who is new to the Blogosphere?
