Home Sweet Home

I just returned from a fun getaway with my husband to Las Vegas. I'm so thankful to be home - and I'm even more thankful that I live in a city that goes to sleep at night.

With the holidays, and then the trip just a few days after New Year's, I didn't plan for my blog post, so I don't have a Way Back When-sday to share today.

I'll be back on Friday with my regular blog - some faith-filled reflections on getting away with my hubby.

But I'd love to know: Have you been to Las Vegas before? What did you think? Do you want to go back, or stay far, far away?

  1. I leave for Vegas in a couple of weeks. It's a work trip, but we're staying at Caesar's, which will be fun.

    1. Jill, I think I can safely say I'd be just fine if I never get back to the Vegas Strip! It was fun, and I'm so happy we were given such an amazing trip, but I think once is enough for this small town girl. :) If you ever get a chance, it's worth going!

  3. I went to Vegas several years ago with a company I worked for. So it was me and bunch of other child care directors. I had so much fun but it was in July and it felt like someone had put a cosmic blow-dryer on us.

I have several super funny stories to tell but I won't write a book on your blog page. :) Glad you had a good time!

    1. Jessica - it was pretty cool while we were there, but there was no snow, so I couldn't complain! I can't imagine how hot July is - whew! I'd love to hear your Vegas stories one day. :)

  4. Welcome home! I've only been to Las Vegas once. It was an overnight stopover on the way to rafting through the Grand Canyon. I was so impressed by the elaborate architecture of various buildings, the musically-coordinated fountains at the Bellagio, and the Cirque du Soleil show "O" that we enjoyed. Fun stuff!

    1. Donna, you just listed some of my favorite aspects of Vegas! The buildings are incredible, the shows are amazing and some of the sights are truly one of a kind - including the fountains. So happy you had a good experience there - and rafting in Grand Canyon?!?! Wow.

  5. You were so close to me!! I hate that we didn't get to see each other...but I'll see you in 6 weeks! Yay!

We went to Vegas when I was 10 for Thanksgiving. We met my grandparents there (they drove from Oklahoma). It was back when Vegas was trying to be all family friendly. Weird, right? But we did Circus Circus and the MGM Grand theme park and watched the pirate show outside of Treasure Island...some cool memories. I also went five years ago on work and I don't think I left Caesar's Palace the whole time! LOL.

    1. Lindsay - I know! By the third day I was ready to get out of the city, but we didn't have much time or money to go other places. I can't wait to see you in sunny Florida soon, though!!

We took a tour of the city the last day (we should have taken it the first day!) and the tour guide told us that there was a period where Vegas was trying to be "kid friendly" - but they've gone away from that now, which I'm actually quite happy about. There were a few things I'd love to show my children, but the majority of it was a bit much for little eyes and ears. :) My family actually stayed at Circus Circus for one night when I was nine and we were passing through after visiting relatives in California for Christmas. It was very memorable!!

  6. Hi Gabrielle! Glad you had a fun getaway with your hubby! I've been to Vegas several times...it's not my #1 vacation spot but it has it's own fun too. (I'm pretty good at the penny slots! LOL)

    1. Lacie, thank you for stopping by! I agree, Vegas has it's own fun. My hubby and I reserved a small amount of money for slots and after putting a dollar in a slot machine, I won $28! That was the highlight of our gambling. :)

  7. Sounds like you had a great trip, Gabe!

I've never been to Vegas. It's never been on the top of my must-experience list, but I know there's probably lots of fun stuff there!

    1. Melissa, it wasn't at the top of my list, but I was happy to go for free! It was a good time, but I'm very happy to be back in the Midwest. It's a different lifestyle out there, for sure! We had a great time.

  8. I don't plan on going to Vegas. Ever. But I can relate to Jessica's cosmic hair dryer analogy, I went to Phoenix in July (and met the AWESOME Lindsay Harrel!) and oh my word it was BRUTALLY hot.
But getting away with hubby? Nice.

    1. Jennifer - I can't imagine Vegas in July! Ouch. :) And a lot of the pools are topless...so I'd have to stay inside a casino to stay cool. Getting away with hubby was priceless. :)

  9. I've tried leaving this comment 4 times. I'm still figuring out my new computer.

Anyway, Gabe, I so look forward to hearing more of your impressions of Las Vegas. Once you get away from the glitz and grime of the Strip, it's like a normal city. Well, except for the slots in every gas station and grocery store. And the 24-hour, never sleep atmosphere. And the billboards. Okay, maybe it's not totally a normal city.

We lived there for eight years. It was an interesting place to live. We loved being there because we got involved with a great church. Would I be in a hurry to move back? No, but our memories from there are unforgettable. Looking forward to hearing more, Gabe!

    1. Jeanne - I thought of you as I was there! It has it's beauty and it's charm, but we didn't get off the strip very far, so I wasn't able to see the "real" Las Vegas. A good church makes all the difference, too!! Looking forward to talking more about it in Florida next month!

    1. Sherrinda, I know some people who go often, too, but I don't think it would be for me. :) It was fun and we had a great time, but we sure loved coming back home!

  11. I've not been to Vegas before -- I'd be interested to go but more for the outskirt activities like rock climbing at Red Rock or other such rock faces
